Technology at Work for the Oil and Gas Industry

Ocean Energy, Inc. is one of the largest independent oil and gas exploration and production companies in the United States, with operations in the continental U.S., the Gulf of Mexico and seven countries worldwide. “Our main function is to explore for and develop energy sources,” says Gary Acheé, Geosciences Support Specialist.

Many employees require computers that support dual monitors – such as Sun and Silicon Graphics workstations – to display seismic data analysis and high-end graphics. But delivering presentations using these dual-monitor systems was always a problem – until the Lafayette office purchased three Rear Projection SMART Board 3000i interactive whiteboards.

Solving the Dual-Monitor Dilemma
Previously, presenters would try to find two projectors and string the video cables together requiring the equipment to be placed in the middle of the meeting area. This resulted in a cluttered and noisy meeting area that was difficult to set up and use.

“In our main conference room we utilize a large projector screen and built in projector. Adding a 3000i resolved our dual-monitor requirement by providing a clean and easy setup, allowing us to discuss how the seismic and map displays relate to each other. In smaller conference rooms we can now use two 3000i projectors with a very simple, clean connection from the workstation to the projectors. The 3000i makes it easy for presenters to control applications from its touch-sensitive surface.” states Mark Larson, Geophysical Systems Specialist.

Training and Videoconferencing Tools
This setup also works well for training sessions. “We’re able to just roll the 3000i into the room and plug it in like a second monitor. It makes a training session so much more effective – working on one monitor is cumbersome,” explains Larson.

Since every room in the office also has a network connection, staff can access files and use the interactive whiteboard for everything from large or private presentations to project reviews and daily meetings. Employees can also use the 3000i to videoconference with the head office in Houston or with clients globally.

The end result – SMART products have made meeting, training and conferencing more effective and efficient for Ocean Energy employees. As Acheé says, “The 3000i is flexible, easy to set up and easier to use than a projector and screen.”
