Environmental Policy

SMART and RoHS Directive

SMART Technologies supports global efforts to ensure electronic equipment is manufactured, sold and disposed in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. For the appropriate products, SMART complies with the European Union’s Restriction of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive 2002/95/EC, which took effect on July 1, 2006.

The RoHS Directive restricts the use of six environmentally sensitive substances used in the manufacture of electronic and electrical equipment. The RoHS directive is also linked to the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. WEEE requires manufacturers to ensure proper collection, recycling and treatment processes are in place for all their products.

SMART’s RoHS compliance

SMART has worked with its suppliers to ensure these product components are compliant with the RoHS Directive through a process that includes certificates of compliance, XRF analysis and external analytical laboratory testing. The appropriate products also adhere to RoHS labeling requirements and bear the WEEE symbol.

The WEEE symbol on SMART products indicates that these products should not be disposed as regular waste. Instead, they should be recycled using the WEEE procedures that are in place in your specific location.

SMART and China RoHS Directive

SMART Technologies supports global efforts to ensure electronic information products (EIP) are manufactured, sold and disposed in an environmentally friendly manner. As part of that commitment, SMART complies with the administrative measures of the Control of Pollution Caused by Electronic Information Products developed by the People’s Republic of China (China RoHS).

China RoHS requires that manufacturers identify recyclable material and disclose any use of six environmentally sensitive substances above the threshold values.

SMART’s China RoHS compliance

SMART ensures all its products meet China RoHS requirements through a process that includes certificates of compliance, XRF analysis and external analytical laboratory testing. All SMART’s products also conform to China RoHS labeling requirements and bear the following information.

The Environmentally Friendly Use Period (EFUP) refers to the time during which toxic or hazardous substances or elements contained in EIP will not leak or mutate under normal operating conditions. A number is used that is commonly based on the life span and reparability of the product, industry agreements and trends.

The Maximum Concentration Values table (MCV Table) refers to the names and contents of environmentally sensitive substances within SMART products in excess of the maximum concentration values listed in SJ/T11363-2006. Any parts in excess of the maximum concentration values are under EU RoHS exemption.

The labeling on packing materials for SMART products indicates if they should not be disposed as regular waste. Instead, they should be collected and disposed separately using the procedures put in place for recycling packaging materials.
