What are the wall-opening requirements for installing the interactive whiteboard?
The installation requires two wall openings – one for the interactive whiteboard and the second for the cable that connects the pen tray to the computer. The interactive whiteboard wall opening should be framed vertically and horizontally by wall studs. To support the weight of the whiteboard, the vertical wall stud should run from the floor to the top of the wall opening.

The finished wall opening must measure as follows:

Model Dimensions
1910 and 2976 68 5/8" W x 54 3/8" H (174.2 cm x 138.2 cm)
1810 and 2876 57 13/16" W x 46 3/16" H (146.8 cm x 117.3 cm)
1710 53 13/16" W x 43 3/16" H (136.7 cm x 109.7 cm)
  • The hole for the cable that connects the pen tray to the computer is 2 3/8" (6.0 cm) in diameter.

How high should the interactive whiteboard be installed?
The recommended height from the floor to the center of the interactive whiteboard is approximately 57 1/2" (146 cm).
What is a mirror stand?
A mirror stand is a frame that holds one or two mirrors to fold the light path from the projector to the whiteboard.

The SMART mirror stand comes fully assembled with two mirrors. The space-saving mirror stand is less that 30" (76.2 cm) deep, height adjustable, and includes casters and storage space. The integrated projector features XGA resolution (1024 x 768), a short-throw lens and 2,500 lumens of brightness.

Refer to the chart below to determine which model is suited best for your needs.

Which brands and models of projectors can be used with the interactive whiteboard?
Any projector may be used with an In-Wall Rear Projection SMART Board interactive whiteboard. You'll want to consider three criteria when choosing a projector:
  • Projector brightness
  • Throw distance of the projector for the desired screen size
  • Room behind the interactive whiteboard for projection

How far should the projector be from the interactive whiteboard?
Every projector has a different required throw distance to achieve a desired image size. For example, for a 72" (182.9 cm) diagonal screen the average is 8’–12’ (2.4–3.7 m). The projection room must be large enough to accommodate the distance for the desired screen size. You may need a mirror stand to shorten the overall distance required in the projection room.
When using a mirror stand (other than the SMART mirror stand), how do I calculate the amount of room required in the projection room?
To calculate the optimal distance required in the projection room from the projector to the interactive whiteboard when using a mirror stand, you must do the following:
  1. Determine the throw distance of the projector for the desired image size. The image size will be determined by the diagonal size of the In-Wall Rear Projection SMART Board interactive whiteboard you select.
  2. Measure the distance from the front of the projector lens to the back of the projector (the projector depth). Add this to the number obtained in step one.
  3. Divide the total distance by three if you are using two mirrors, or by two if you are using one mirror
  4. Add 20 percent of the projector depth in step two to the distance obtained in step three
For example:
  1. Projector XYZ requires a throw distance of 95" (241.3 cm) to project a 72" (182.9 cm) diagonal image
  2. The projector is 15" (38.1 cm) deep. Therefore, a total of 110" (279.4 cm) is needed.
  3. Using one mirror, the distance is 55" (139.7 cm)(110" divided by two). With two mirrors, the distance is 36.7" (93.2 cm)(110" divided by three).
  4. Using one mirror, the projection room must be at least 58" (147.3 cm) deep (55" plus 20 percent of 15"). With two mirrors, the projection room must be at least 39.7" (100.8 cm) deep (36.7" plus 20 percent of 15").

Which characteristics should I consider when purchasing a mirror stand?
The mirror characteristics affect the quality of the image shown on the In-Wall Rear Projection SMART Board interactive whiteboard. You should consider these characteristics:
  • Reflectance – This is the percentage of light that is reflected off the mirror when an image is projected onto it. The average range is 94–97 percent, but 94 percent reflectance is recommended. Typically, the higher the reflectance, the higher the price of the mirror.
  • First-surface or second-surface mirrors – This will also affect the image quality. You should use first-surface mirrors with the interactive whiteboard because this will eliminate ghosting and provide a brighter image.

Can I install two In-Wall Rear Projection SMART Board interactive whiteboards side by side?
Yes. You can use side-by-side In-Wall Rear Projection SMART Board interactive whiteboards to display images from one computer. With this setup, you can move windows between the two interactive whiteboards and double your viewable space. With an 1810 model, for instance, you create an active screen area of 43 1/4" (109.9 cm) H x 115 1/4" (292.8 cm) W. Note that two projectors and mirror stands are required.
