Recall - frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why did we receive a recall notice or a telephone call?
You were mailed a recall notification or you received a telephone call from SMART or an authorized SMART reseller because you were identified as a potential owner of the recalled speaker.
  2. How did you identify us as a potential owner of the recalled speaker?
You were identified by SMART or one of SMART's authorized resellers.
  3. Which product is involved?
All USB audio systems for SMART Board 600 series interactive whiteboards (SBA-NA, SBA-UK and SBA-AU). These speakers were sold between November, 2005 and May 25, 2006.
  4. Of the speaker pair, it is only the control speaker that houses the amplifier that is a safety hazard. This speaker can be identified as the speaker with the volume knob and USB receptacles. The speaker without the volume knob is not part of the recall.
  5. What is the problem with the speaker?
In a very small percentage of units, a passive component within the amplifier circuit fails. When this component fails, it results in excess power flowing to the speaker. The excess power may cause the speaker coil to overheat, resulting in either smoke or ignition of the cone within the speaker. Replacing the speaker that contains the amplifier solves the safety hazard.
  6. Can we use the speaker until we receive the replacement?
No, stop using and unplug the speakers.
  7. How do we unplug the speaker?
This diagram provides you with instructions to unplug the speaker.
  8. How do we receive the replacement speaker?
The instructions described in the recall process will tell you how to receive an RMA number and your replacement speaker. If you are a customer in the United Kingdom, please call 08701.608.200. If you are a customer in Australia, please call Electroboard at 1-800-622-800. 9. How long will it take to receive the replacement speaker?
Once you have an RMA number, you should receive your replacement speaker within 7 weeks.
  10. What if we need help with uninstalling our old speaker and replacing it with the new replacement speaker?
Instructions for replacing the control speaker will be sent with the replacement speaker. If you need further assistance, please contact your reseller.
  11. Do we have to return the current speaker?

  13. Can we just receive money instead of a speaker replacement?
The recall only provides for a free replacement of your control speaker. You cannot receive money instead.
  14. How do we dispose of the current speaker?
When you dispose of any electrical of electronic equipment, including SMART products, we strongly encourage you to contact your local WEEE recycling agency for recycling and disposal advice. Alternatively, contact your local reseller or SMART Technologies Inc. for information on the environmental performance of our products.
  15. Have there been any reported injuries or property damage from the speaker?
    No.
